Cleaning And Maintenance
Moly versus No-Moly!
The arguement of Moly versus No-Moly has been around for ages and will not be resolved here.
Emotional issues aside, many use Moly for the benefits in less frequent cleaning. I generally shoot
Moly and can extend my shooting to 75 or 100 rounds without loss of accuracy. That said, not all
guns/bullets/powders like Moly. I have a 6PPC and a 308 that shoot like a laser with Moly bullets.
On the other hand, a certain 17 Mach IV is only good for a string of 10-15 rounds before accuracy
jumps out the window. It shoots the same with naked bullets. After 10-15 rounds, I have to clean it. If you use Moly, cleaning patterns need changing and possibly solvents and tools.
I only use soft patches and occasional soft bristle brushes. Mild to medium solvents only occasionally
and WD-40 as the regular cleaning solvent. You have to rework all your loads due to the reduced friction
so it is no simple change. People that use it tend to be adamant about it and the others cite catastrophic
earthquakes and floods when used. I can only say if you are happy shooting naked bullets, keep doing it.
If you want to experiment then pick a rifle and alter your cleaning behavior, methods and see if it works for
you. Moly will not make your gun shoot more accurately, but it can extend your strings without cleaning.
As a side note, a friend of mine in South Carolina has a 6PPC with over 6,000 rounds through it.
Shot the best group of my life with it and he shoots HOT loads! Now that we've opened the barn door ...
